Quiz question
« on: May 03, 2012, 01:38:35 PM »
I'm sure many will get this pretty much straight away, but it will be informative for the younger generation.

Who remembers what was previously located at the site now home to McDonalds on South Shore, just by Waterloo Road?

I will provide a photo later on  :thumbup1:

It was a restaurant that i think specialised in fish,i always remember it had an illuminated sign which looked like part of the illuminations.I think it had a mermaid inside a cylindrical tube and had ropelight along the top and bottom

Bugger you Kevin! That was going to be my next question!!

'What feature stood outside the restaurant for many years and was regarded as part of the illuminations'

I have always believed the Mermaid to have belonged to the restaurant but have no knowledge. Does anyone know for certain?

If not I will ask Richard Ryan

This was the picture I saw that prompted the question in the first place. One from the many fine collection of photos of John Burke on flickr.

I'm sure there are better views, but there is the 'Promenade Seafood Restaurant'. This would have been before the Mermaid went up as I was old enough to remember it appearing as a new feature one year, must have been early 70's I would guess.

Yes I'm wondering the same myself, Kevin. If anyone is likely to have one, then it is John Burke.

I'll give him a ring (but probably not at this hour! )

I should think not too - I was in the bath...

If I have then I haven't found it yet.  The mermaid not the bath.  There is also no mermaid in the bath (I checked under the scum...)

A sort of record - I'm only just over a month late in answering this...  Those in the know will know why I've been absent.  For those who don't, I've been slavishly writing a book on Blackpool which had a deadline of end of May.  This will feature a bunch of old postcards - many from the collection of Chris and many more from my own collection plus modern photos taken from the same spot - or as close as I could get.

The photos and text have now gone off to the publisher and the book - to be called "Blackpool: Then and Now" (yes I know...) should be in the shops for Christmas.

There's a few Blackpool photos appearerd at my flickr account recently and if it seemed I was leaving out some obvious views then the reason is those shots were for the book!

I can now breathe a sigh of relief and carry on with projects that came to a crashing halt.  Chris, the DVD of old cine films is one of those...

Cheers me dears,
John

Good to hear from you and see you back on here John.

Likewise I have been mega busy lately - promising many people many things (including this site) and delivering bugger all as a result  :(  >:(

One was ringing you about this (whilst also asking an update on the DVD  8))

I must admit, I did check your Flickr account only the Bank Holiday weekend, but to no avail. I have asked the question ref the mermaid on Friends of Blackpool Illuminations at the same time. Nothing yet. A phone call to Richard (I'm not promising when though  ;)

Well, I've contacted one or two people by e-mail.

Hopefully I can glean some more information in the not too distant  :thumbup1:

I have answers!!!!

Many thanks to Peter Parr from the illuminations department.

To be fair to him and the department, I will be posting the info he fed me onto the Friends of Blackpool Illuminations site on Facebook in the first place.

I will post them on here as well though in a couple of days (well, you've waited this long  ;))

Ok, the Mermaid feature was indeed once part of the illuminations display. Though Peter has not confirmed this bit for me, I suspect it is just the casing that was part of the display, made from fibre glass and perspex, I believe that the Mermaid itself would have been made as I, nor anyone else has been able to confirm it was actually in the illuminations.

The display case was used in the dolls section, which had rotating dresser dolls on two levels that slowly rotated round.

The Seafood Promenade Restaurant bought it off the Illuminations Department and the lights guys agreed to maintain it for them.

Now, here is another question. Did it remain up and lit up all year round, or just during the illuminations? Does anyone know?

Yes, I'm sure it was lit throughout the season.
