Billy's Weekly Liar
« on: September 13, 2012, 03:24:39 PM »
Does anyone know when Billy's Weekly Liar stopped publication?  I remember seeing it as a child in Blackpool and loved it's zany sense of humour.

Never heard of it to be honest Jeremy.

Roughly what year(s) do you remember seeing it?

I was in Blackpool as a child pretty much from the mid-1960s through to the mid-1970s but I seem to think I saw it more when I was younger.  The paper was sold on the street.

had a look on the web and these are a few of the headlines from the paper.
'Man kicked to death by spiders'

'Unconscious skeleton found on beach.'

There has been a terrible plane crash on a cemetery in Ireland. They reckoned one thousand, three hundred and seventy eight bodies had been recovered so far.

A highly dangerous midget fortune teller had assaulted a guard by head butting him in the privates and was on the run from prison.'Small Medium at Large'

A pub landlord refused to serve a Gypsy because he had been told by his bank manager that under no circumstances must he accept traveler's cheques.

sounds like a good read
heres a pic of a guy selling it

Brilliant Dave, I am loving those headlines and the photo of the guy with the advertisement board.

It sounds right up my street. Was it done in black and white newspaper form Jeremy or more comic book style with coloured cartoon pictures?

I was born in '65 incidentally and was coming to Blackpool since a babe in arms, but still have no recollection of this. Was it just a local publication or national.

I really shall have to do some googling!!

Great picture, Dave - and yes, I remember the man in the top hat selling it!

I just phoned my brother (a few years older than me) and he has just deflated me a little.  Although it was called Billy's Weekly Liar he tells me they apparently only ever printed two issues a year - enough to satisfy the holidaymakers who rarely spent more than a fortnight in the town, and so they sold the two issues in rotation during the season.

I think it was only the north west, BelleVueShrew - and definitely black and white newspaper format from what I recall.

It's the kind of humour you don't really see nowadays.  I found a posting from Ken Dodd who a few years ago was trying to complete a collection of the papers.  Wonder how he got on?!
