Building Bridges
« on: July 14, 2014, 09:53:06 PM »
After so long off the forum it's fair to say I've got some bridge building of my own to do. However, just 4 miles away from my house there is some serious bridge building currently taking place over the choppy waters of the Firth of Forth.

As the original Forth Road Bridge, built in 1964, continues to struggle under the weight of the crazy traffic levels the building of the Forth Replacement Crossing is now well under way.

The official website for this ambitious project can be seen here :
http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk/project/forth-replacement-crossing

The new bridge will be known as the Queensferry Crossing once it's opened and a 'drive over' video has now also been produced:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWtpaOAhZzk

I've been taking some photographs of the construction of the bridge and will continue to do so right up until its completion in mid 2016. As soon as I can get my photobucket account working again that is !

Watch this space  :thumbup1:

Thanks Peter  8)

Here are just a few of the photos I've got uploaded to Photobucket. Weather permitting I'm hoping to get down on Saturday this weekend to get some more of this amazing project.

First photo and not much to see, except some very basic foundation works being carried out.

Work commences on building the foundations for the North Tower.

The guys work on this project 24/7. It's paying dividends though as still on schedule and under budget !

The "old" bridge by night. Soon this will only be for buses, HGVs, cyclists and pedestrians

From the waters of the Forth a tower now begins to appear

Looking South towards the South Queensferry end tower

Central Tower

The base of the North Tower. The camera doesn't do the size of this thing justice

Work on building the North Tower

Work continues apace on the bridge. Unfortunately the viewing side of the old bridge is only open on Saturdays these days so opportunities to get down and get photos are quite limited. However, I will be going down to the Forth as often as I can as - geeky as it may well make me - I am utterly captivated by watching the construction of this vital new bridge continue.

Thanks for looking.

Little update from tonight. I didn't realise that you could get quite so close to the new construction so was rather excited to be able to snap these ones....

Sneaky access through a small housing estate in South Queensferry

Brings you to the start of what will be the South Carriageway

View looking North across the Forth

Again, the camera doesn't do the size of this thing justice

Some random construction shots. It is going to be amazing watching construction of this bridge  :thumbup1:

Only 5 days without an accident though

All 3 bridges visible here. Not many places in the world will have that kind of view once it's all complete

Thanks for looking and following the building of the new bridge. Further updates will follow, hopefully right up until its opening in 2016

No lol. So far as I'm aware there haven't been any serious injuries in construction of the bridge so far. I think Health and Safety have come on leaps and bounds since days of construction of the Rail bridge and original Road Bridge....

As in you wouldn't see scenes like these nowadays....

Absolutely insane stuff !!

Apologies for lack of updates recently. Moved job a couple of weeks back and things have been ever so slightly hectic.

The Bridge celebrates it's 50th birthday this week (4th September) and I'm planning on getting down to some of the events to take some photos for the site.

In the meantime, this is an excellent gap filler...

Shown only on BBC Scotland this program documents the building of the Road Bridge and has some amazing footage of its construction. Hard to believe that men were allowed to work in conditions such as those shown.

Enjoy !

OK, so I woke up this morning to beautiful clear blue skies in Dunfermline so thought I'd get down to bridge this morning and get some updates. Of course got down there and couldn't see two feet infront of me thanks to some very thick fog !

Eventually the sun broke through a bit so have attached a few more photos from today. Unfortunately the path on the old bridge that provides a great view of construction is closed today in preparation for tonight's Fireworks display (marking the 50th birthday of bridge) so I was a bit restricted in what I could snap.

Enjoy...and I'll get more of these as soon as I can

As the sun came out I sneaked across to the South Side Construction site...

So it's really starting to take shape. Still on schedule and, I believe, under budget which is very rare for this country !

More updates to follow whenever I can manage.  :)

Was out having a great night last night so didn't make it down to the Firework display. However, lots of YouTube videos already surfacing of what looked like a fantastic display.

The bridge looks amazing with the fireworks going off along the length of it.
